Country profile: Togo

Country profile: Togo
After development in the country’s digital sector mainly focusing on subsea improvement - two major submarine cable projects, Google’s Equiano and Maroc Telecom West Africa, have landed in the capital Lomé since the turn of the decade – focus is turning to improving service quality for the country’s users, such as an October 2024 free roaming agreement between Togo, Ghana and Benin.

New data centres are arriving in the country. Following the opening of Africa Data Centres’ Lomé facility in 2021, the first carrier-neutral data centre in the country, ST Digital chose Togo as one of three West African countries to build new facilities in, which entered into service towards the end of 2024. And on the wholesale side, a recent 60% reduction in the cost of dark fibre was mandated in January 2025 by the Togolese regulatory authority, a move expected to increase competition and improve quality of service.

One promising area for Togolese connectivity has been cybersecurity. The country’s score in the ITU’s Global Cybersecurity Index has risen from 33 to 88, putting Togo on the second-highest rung of countries globally. A national cybersecurity strategy has helped achieve this, as well as a focus on training and education to ensure enough professionals to implement security measures in the country’s digital economy.
