Country profile: Gabon

Country profile: Gabon
Gabon’s connectivity development in recent years has primarily focused on the subsea sector.

Five cables now serve the West Africa country, with a big one joining the list in the past year - the 45,000 km 2Africa cable, which circumnavigates the continent, has now landed in Gabon, delivering 180 Tbps across 16 fibre pairs. In addition to this, national telco ACE Gabon announced in March 2025 that Medusa Africa, an extension of the existing Medusa project to link various points around the Mediterranean, will also land in the city of Port-Gentil, delivering 400 Tbps of connectivity to the country. Ghana’s fixed internet speed is already at a healthy 43Mbps, and the additional subsea capacity will serve to improve this further.

There is also data centre development underway in Gabon. ST Digital announced in May 2024 its plans to build three facilities in West Africa, including one in Gabon – as of March 2025 the facility was complete and operational. This was followed in January 2025 by a partnership between the Gabonese government and the American firm Cybastion, who will build a data centre in the country and work on initiatives including digital ID provision. Additionally, Indian developer Shapoorji Pallonji signed a memorandum of understanding with Gabon’s government in July 2023 to build a fourth data centre in the country.

Gabon’s wireless coverage is good – 93% of the population is covered by mobile internet – but limited in quality, with 4G coverage only really available in the country’s cities.
